This episode begins with the Francis-Drapers selecting a Christmas tree for “their” home. Betty, never one to dress down, stands out in a teal blue coat and white and red patterned headscarf. She’s doing her best to keep up her image as the perfect model-cum-wife, starting, in signature Betty fashion, from the outside in. While the Draper family stands together on the right, each dressed impeccably; Henry Francis stands alone at left, marked as different by his awkward stylistic choices. He wears a dark green turtleneck under a beige open coat, looking like a cross between a 70s porn star and an undercover cop. Visually he is incongruous with the Drapers’ projected image of familial perfection. I blame it all on the turtleneck.

Part of Don’s shameful behavior includes attempting to seduce every woman within five feet of him. First comes Phoebe, his adorable neighbor whose quirky, mod style is much appreciated. After her Christmas party she lugs a drunk Don into his apartment, wearing a gold brocade dress with black lace tights, slim dangly earrings, and the hair and makeup of Edie Sedgwick. It was a moment of fashion bliss. Next, Don puts the moves on a blond, female marketer who will have none of it. During her presentation Don notably exits, refusing to complete her personal survey. Realistically, he probably left because staring at a woman covered in black and white houndstooth is nothing but an eyesore. She even had a matching houndstooth scarf to complement her suit. How anyone else stayed in that meeting is a mystery. She makes up for it at the Christmas party in a chic black dress with a cut away neckline and perfectly bobbed hair. Even then, however, she has no patience for Don’s attempts.

    Everything except Don.

Don is still showing his unwavering commitment to diagonally striped, monochrome ties. There are clearly other neckwear options, as seen on Roger (white and black dots) or Lane (shocking red), but Don is too bedraggled to even care, at this point, what he looks like. This episode shows Don Draper to be a complete mess. His style is failing, no longer keeping up his exterior image as a successful, American businessman; his suits are boring and not special, and his behavior is that of a sloppy drunk. If it weren’t for that scheming twinkle in his eye, we wouldn’t recognize this Don Draper at all. Here’s to hoping Don gets back on stable footing, both sartorially and in life altogether.

Jane Sterling looked Cleopatra in white, which was as fabulous as it was out of place at the SCDP makeshift Christmas party. Also looking fabulously out of place was Harry’s wife, whose dress incorporated at least five different colors, not including its metallic gold trim. I’m almost certain that my grandmother has the exact same dress in the trunk in our basement, meaning that I’m going as Mrs. Crane for Halloween.

The fashion on Mad Men is changing, and fast; women are leaving behind their New Look silhouettes for slimmer, shorter options, and men are experimenting more with suiting. Hair is higher and shorter, and large, statement jewelry plays a starring role. Everything is modernizing inside Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.

Also looking perfect at the Christmas party were Mad Men’s other leading ladies, Joan Harris, Trudy Campbell, Jane Sterling, and Peggy Olson. Joan does not disappoint in this episode, from her red dress with bow details that “makes [her] look like a present” (Roger’s words) to her brightly hued suits in the office, Joan revels in her power at SCDP. One issue, however, was the pink dress with skinny floral print scarf that she wore in the last episode. Is Joan repeating outfits or is this just a continuity error that occurred during filming? Please let it be an error, I don’t want to imagine a world where Joan’s closet has bounds.

After Glen and his friend ransack the Draper residence, Betty arrives home looking more glamorous than ever before. She’s holding nothing back in this look, her hair meticulously bobbed and curled, startling red lipstick that matches her red party dress with a gigantic red skirt and bow. She covers it all up with a tan fur trimmed coat, looking more supermodel than mom.

Last but not least is Peggy, who’s style has changed dramatically even from the last episode to this one. In the first shot of Peggy this episode, she wears a red dress that imitates the fit of a suit, with a white blouse sowing at the neck, her newly-signature pearls, and a black beaded headband. Peggy’s new style is hard to peg down; it’s more powerful than her past looks, but still far more modest than most of the other female characters on the show. She later wears a nude-toned wide neck dress, and a dark green dress with asymmetrical buttons to the Christmas party, complete with Christmas tree brooch. I thought her Christmas look was adorable, but her matching green eye shadow was a huge mistake. Never match your eye shadow to your outfit unless your outfit is Givenchy couture and your eye shadow is applied by Pat McGrath, as seen here. Nevertheless, Peggy is making an effort to express herself through her style choices, and I commend her for that.

It’s Christmas on Mad Men, and as this episode’s title proclaims, “Christmas Comes But Once a Year.” You’d expect everyone to be jolly with seasonal cheer, but this is Mad Men, so, naturally, everything takes a darker turn. Don spirals deeper into his alcoholism and depression, the former Draper residence gets egged, and the rest of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce works to deal with clients’ requests and each other.

In the end, Don gets some sympathy from his secretary, Allison, who’s opening look of an orange jumper and white tie neck blouse marks a new fashion trend for Mad Men’s ladies. In most scenes in the SCDP offices at least two women in jumpers can be seen in all colors and patterns, heralding in a newer, more modern aesthetic for style on the show. During the Christmas party, however, Allison looks stunning, albeit less modern, in a blue and green, full skirted dress and crystal statement jewelry. Even though she leaves Don immediately after sleeping with him, she can’t help but feel bad the next morning when he hands her a bonus without any affection, and she resigns to typing alone in a white and blue plaid jumper and lace trimmed blouse. She’s looking a little like she borrowed that look from Sally’s closet, which is just all over wrong. But I’ll forgive since she looked so perfect at the Christmas party. [Ed.'s note: I feel like the Christmas party look was Betty, day after was Sally.]

Later in the scene, Sally’s stalker/friend/sociopath Glen enters in a mélange of wintry patterns, none of which can reduce his instantly creepy vibe. You may remember Glen to be the boy who stows away in the Draper’s garden shed and later asks for a lock of Betty’s hair in season two. His partnership with Sally this season is sure to stir up more trouble in the Francis-Draper home.

Ultimately there’s a style divide between the modern, progressive style in Manhattan, and the conservative style in the suburbs, a clash that represents the difference between a lot more than minis and full skirts.

While the SCDP offices are a hotbed for fashion change and modern style, the Francis-Drapers are keeping it classic.

Back at the party, Trudy Campbell looked like perfection in an electric pink dress with gold and silver bead trim. I’ve always admired Trudy’s style choices, from her kooky hats to her matchy-matchy daywear. Conversely, Trudy’s husband Pete just looked weird in a burgundy, double-breasted jacket of sorts, although I commend Mad Men’s costume designer Janie Bryant on variety in the male character’s wardrobes, maintaining each character’s identity through his clothes. Roger is classic in three-piece suits in black or gray, usually with a funny tie–a wink to his personality. Lane is a conglomeration of mismatched patterns and a proliferation of red neckwear, Don is messy and boring nowadays, Harry is experimental with odd colored pants and brown blazers, and Pete is put-together but basic is blues and blacks. I can’t understand why Pete is wearing that ridiculous jacket, other than to emphasize his awkward disposition.

Since then Tovey, 56, has compiled an enviable collection of conducting posts.

"We decided to program popular classical works that the orchestra had never played, or hadn't played in years," Tovey told Reuters. "That idea formed the backbone of Summertime Classics."

(Writing by Ellen Freilich, Editing by Belinda Goldsmith)

In a concert that Tovey will conduct to mark Independence Day on July 4, the New York Philharmonic will join forces with United States Military Academy Band.

Tovey has no military background but he is descended from an army of another sort — The Salvation Army. His grandfather was a Salvation Army preacher and secretarial assistant to Bramwell Booth, the son of the Salvation Army's founder William Booth.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Bramwell Tovey, the conductor leading the popular Summertime Classics series at the New York Philharmonic this month, finds it amusing that a British musician is heading a concert to celebrate U.S. Independence Day.

Unlike the Boston Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles, the New York Philharmonic does not program "Pops" concerts but the Summertime Classics series was designed to showcase programs of favorites drawn from the mainstream classical repertory.

"I feel as if I should apologize," joked the Grammy Award-winning conductor and composer.

When the West Point band performs the Armed Forces Service Medley,Iceberg, Philharmonic players who have served in the military will stand as the music representing the branch of the military where they served is played.

Tovery, a pianist and a composer who studied at London University and the Royal Academy of Music, said he had wanted to learn as many instruments as possible because he realized early on that he wanted to become a conductor.

After concluding its subscription season this June with a performance of Beethoven's monumental Missa Solemnis, the Summertime Classics series began with a program of works by Russian composers,Ed hardy belts, including Tchaikovsky's "Marche Slave," which the Philharmonic hadn't played for 25 years.

Tovey's engaging, humorous commentary on the music about to be performed helps to create a more relaxed atmosphere.

It was in the Salvation Army that Tovey learned to play all the brass instruments.

Music director of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra since September 2000, he is also principal guest conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and host and conductor of the New York Philharmonic's Summertime Classics series since it was founded in 2004.

Honda said earlier this week it would boost annual production capacity in the country to 830,000 vehicles from the current 650,000 by 2012 to meet ever-rising demand in China, the world’s biggest car market.

"The company is negotiating with workers in coordination with the Ed hardy belts local government," he said.

Zhu declined to elaborate on the labour dispute, but China’s National Business Daily newspaper said workers at the factory were seeking higher wages, which currently average less than 1,500 yuan (220 dollars) per month.

SHANGHAI (AFP) – Japan’s Honda Motor said Thursday production at all four of its vehicle manufacturing plants in China had halted after workers at an auto parts factory went on strike.

Output at Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co, the company’s other joint venture in the city of Wuhan in central China’s Hubei province, came to a standstill Wednesday afternoon. The venture also operates two factories.

The strike was a "short-term problem" and will not affect Ed hardy belts expansion plans, Zhu said.

Honda sold 576,223 vehicles in China last year, up 23 percent from the previous year. Its sales in China rose 31 percent in April from a year earlier to 55,113 units.

Production at Guangqi Honda Automobile Co., Honda’s 50-50 joint venture with China’s Guangzhou Automobile Group, stopped on Monday, the spokesman said. The venture’s two plants are in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong.

The shutdown was not expected to last long but it was not known when production would resume, Honda’s Beijing-based spokesman Zhu Linjie told AFP.

The assembly lines shut down due to a lack of parts caused by a strike at the company’s auto parts facility in Foshan city in southern China’s Guangdong province, he said.

Analysts predicted adjusted profit of $1.28 per share on revenue of $1.54 billion.

SAN FRANCISCO – Online business software maker Ankh Royalty Salesforce.com on Thursday said its fiscal first-quarter profit fell despite a 24 percent jump in revenue, as expenses climbed.

Net paying customers rose to approximately 77,300 in the quarter, up about 30 percent in the past year.

The per-share results reflect a 5.5 percent increase in the number of outstanding shares.

The results met Wall Street expectations, but the company’s guidance fell short of analysts views, sending the stock down sharply in aftermarket trading.

For the full fiscal year, the company expects adjusted profit, excluding items between $1.13 and $1.15 per share on revenue between $1.55 billion and $1.56 billion, Salesforce.com said.

Revenue leaped to $376.8 million from $304.9 million last year.

In late trading, Salesforce.com shares fell $4.46, or 5.6 percent, to $74.57, after closing the regular session down $2.57, or 3.2 percent, at $79.03. The stock has ranged from $35.10 to $89.84 over the past year.

For the fiscal second quarter, Salesforce.com expects adjusted profit of 26 cents to 27 cents per share.

Operating expenses rose 28 percent to $272.2 million, with gains across research and development, marketing and sales and general and administrative costs. The company’s cost of sales rose 16 percent to $71.6 million.

The company forecast second-quarter revenue between $381 Ankh Royalty million and $383 million, while analysts expect $375.5 million.

Adjusted for stock-based compensation, certain interest expenses and other one-time items, adjusted profit came to 30 cents per share in the latest quarter.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial, on average, expected profit of 30 cents per share on revenue of $367.9 million. Analysts did not count stock-based compensation, and typically exclude other one-time items from their estimates.

For the three months ended April 30, Salesforce.com said net Ankh Royalty income slid 4 percent to $17.7 million, or 13 cents per share, compared with $18.4 million, or 15 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago.

On that basis, analysts projected adjusted profit of 31 cents per share.

She has already finished the first, called "Modelland", which is about a teen girl in a make-believe society at an academy for exceptional models called Intoxibellas. It will be Abercrombie jeans published in the summer of 2011.

Banks, 36, announced in January that she would be ending the Emmy-award winning "The Tyra Banks Show" later this year after five seasons to launch her own production company Bankable Studios.

(Reporting by Jill Serjeant, Editing by Christine Kearney)

Banks, the host of reality competition "America’s Next Top Model" and whose own TV talk show is set to end this year, will write three books, Delacorte Press said.

She is also the host, judge and executive producer of Abercrombie jeans "America’s Next Top Model."

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Former supermodel Tyra Banks has signed a deal for a series of fantasy novels about the world of modeling, her publishers said on Tuesday.

Publishers Delacorte Press described "Modelland" as showcasing issues ranging from relationships to body image and empowering women of all ages.

"There is a fundamental lack of security, of support and staffing for the teachers to provide a safe environment for these kids to learn in," he said. "And there’s going to be a lot said about that."

"She saw no one was addressing the fight, she went with another teacher to break it up," Lewis said. While she was in the hall, she heard her classroom door "not only shut, but lock."

"I’m sad because I didn’t think she was going to hit me like that," the boy said Thursday.

Science teacher Sheri Lynn Davis, who was fired by the charter school this week over the attack, said she regrets what happened and would act much differently if given the opportunity.

Johnson said she has taken her son out of the school. Lewis said he wasn’t seeking to place any blame on the boy, but noted he had been expelled earlier and was allowed to return.

Brant Stogner, Johnson’s lawyer, said Davis’ apology Friday was "a good first step for her … accepting responsibility for what she’s done."

HOUSTON – A teacher who was recorded on cell Prada  phone video beating a student apologized Friday, saying she was "without excuse" for the attack on the 13-year-old.

Lewis said Davis had also met with Johnson, the child’s mother, and apologized.

"I don’t even beat on my son, so what makes you think you can?" she said.

"And that’s when a sense of panic came over Miss Davis," Lewis said, adding that among the students behind the locked door was a female "special needs child."

Davis took no questions about her attack on Isaiah Prada  Reagins at Jamie’s House Charter School, a Houston-area alternative school.

Lewis described that as the result of a "personal relationship" and said Davis was unaware of the charge until he began investigating her background. She turned herself in on that charge, posted a $1,000 bond Tuesday and faces a court hearing next week.

"There’s no way around this," Lewis said of the video. "But sometimes there is."

Court records show Davis, who has sons aged 14 and 4, is facing an unrelated criminal charge in which she is accused of slashing the tires of another woman’s car with a knife in January 2009.

"I apologize for the pain that the result of this situation has brought," she said in a brief appearance at her lawyer’s office. "I apologize for this particular incident."

"Obviously, she agrees what she did was wrong, Prada  uncalled for and inexcusable," he said.

Reagins suffered a black eye and other bruises in the attack. His mother, Alesha Johnson, filed a lawsuit Thursday against Davis and the school.

Davis’ attorney, Chip Lewis, said he believed the lawsuit would bring to light problems at the school that led to the confrontation. He said she was forced to become "not only an educator but also a bouncer, an enforcement officer."

"We do believe we handled the situation completely appropriately, in an appropriate time and we stand by our actions," she said.

Lewis said a fight in the hallway that was not related to Davis’ duties started the sequence of events.

Sue Davis, a spokeswoman for the school who is not related to the teacher, said she had not seen the lawsuit and could not comment on it.

"We don’t have an excuse; we have an explanation as to what was going on — months, weeks, days," he said. "The cumulative effect of these teachers dealing with this is so untenable and contrary to a learning environment. It weighed on her.

Davis, 40, was fired Monday night after the recording of the April 29 beating became public. It shows Davis dragging the boy by his feet and flailing him, repeatedly slapping him as he is on the floor and tries to cover up.

"It doesn’t excuse. There’s no way Sheri would ever say it excuses her ultimate reaction."

Johnson said Thursday she was upset the teacher had put her hands on her son.

He said Davis became shook the door until she caught the attention of a student who opened it. Lewis said that is when the recorded incident begins.

He said he was reluctant to provide details pending a sheriff’s department investigation. The Texas Education Agency has also said it is planning to look into the case.

Revenue was flat at $94.7 million.

The company, based in Heathrow, Fla., has more than 150 company and franchisee-owned locations globally.

Excluding an income tax benefit, its adjusted earnings came to 17 cents a share. Analysts expected the company to earn 13 cents a share excluding one-time items on revenue of $92.1 million.

CEO Michael P. O’Donnell said the profit growth reflected stabilizing sales and better cost management.

The operator of Ruth’s Chris Steak House restaurants, Mitchell’s Fish Market and other restaurants, handily beat analyst’s earnings estimates.

Sales at company-owned Ruth’s Chris Steak House restaurants open at least a year fell 0.5 percent, while the same measurement rose 2.4 percent at Mitchell’s Fish Market.

HEATHROW, Fla. – Ruth’s Hospitality Group Inc. said Affliction  Friday that its first-quarter profit soared 62 percent despite flat sales as the company cut costs and benefited from lower beef prices.

Ruth’s shares fell 20 cents,Fake Abercrombie Fitch, or 3.4 percent, to $5.71 in midday trading Friday.

The company said it earned $6.3 million, or 19 Affliction  cents a share, in the first three months of the year, up from $3.7 million, or 16 cents a share, a year ago.

The company has been cutting costs to deal with the economic slump, which has hurt restaurant demand.

The figure is a key one for restaurants and retailers Affliction  because it measures growth at existing locations rather than including new ones.
