PS: That side is so difficult to know until we’ve finished. It’s still all five of us on there and each one is always a reaction to the last record, anyway. It is difficult to know until you’ve actually finished it, until you’ve made all of your final decisions because it can change quite radically at the drop of a hat.

PS: After the touring for my stuff finishes at the end of September, then I will throw myself back into Radiohead, working more on material that we are writing at the moment. I would hope to find time and the right situation to come back and do some dates but also look forward to doing some Radiohead dates back here as well.

PS: Really, no. I think Thom found something that is very appropriate for him. You define your own style, something that is authentically you. You watch Thom or anyone else in the band over the years find that in themselves, I suppose that’s what I’m trying to do to become a singer-songwriter.

Phil Selway: It was something that has been at the back of my mind for a while. I just got to the point where I’d written enough of these pieces that things have kind of been falling into a bigger body of work, which had very much of my character in it. It didn’t feel appropriate to do in Radiohead, and I was about to turn 40, so I think that makes you go through the process of reflection of all your accumulated experiences and any ambitions that you had.

PS: The music very much came first. Odd words and odd lines would come at the same time as the music, but actually the complete lyrics took a lot more grasping than that. There’s as much music in words themselves — if you do them well — as there is with another instrument on there. You just have to find something that ultimately makes sense for you and also something that sits well in the arrangement.

US: Did you get any pointers from Thom about taking over the singing duties?

US: Great. Anything you can tell me about the Radiohead stuff? Obviously we are all dying to know!

PS: That’s where we had to follow The Pixies. That raised our heartbeat a little bit.

PS: We did Bonnarroo, and that was a very memorable show. It was the longest we ever played in one show. I think it was about just over two-and-a-half hours. At the time it seemed like a mammoth task. I suppose that actually we’ve done the majority of our touring in the States. When you’re touring around, you’re in a country for a week at most, and coming to America where you’re here for a couple of months at a time and then immerse yourself in that country and all of the different nuances of it, I think that by the end of the tour you feel fairly rooted here.

PS: Who knows? We don’t know yet. We’re still working on it.

US: Did you meet Kate Hudson, by the way? I heard she was backstage hitting on Thom — per a lot of stories out there.

US: That was some story here, I don’t know. What are the future plans for the album, tour, everything else you’ve got going on? What else is up?

UsMagazine.com:  You’ve been with Radiohead for so long, and this is your first solo album. What was the process of getting it off the ground?

PS: It’s something I’m learning about, really. It has its fun moments. It certainly sheds a different light on yourself as well. That whole sense of actually moving on and learning more about yourself, yeah. It’s a good process to go through. It’s all part of the same grand plan, isn’t it? From a performance point of view, it’s all stagecraft; it’s just learning a different kind of stagecraft.

US: And by the way, when is the next Radiohead record due?

PS: I suppose if you’re suggesting musically on the whole, Radiohead operates on a much larger picture, if you like. Musically, there is a lot of space and you have these delicate layers, delicate detailed layers all on top of each other, and in the middle of that I suppose there’s me,Diesel, which is a different side of me from what’s emerged in Radiohead. It filled something that is identifying me in there, which I don’t think would be a very appropriate thing for me to do in Radiohead.

PS: Really? No! I missed that and didn’t hear about that.

US: OK. This record has the same brooding vibe; it’s got the darkness to it but very poetic at the same time. How is it different from the stuff that you’ve done with Radiohead?

US: You’ve been touring a lot to support the disc overseas. Any big Radiohead shows that prepared you for that?

While Radioheadphiles scratch their heads in bewilderment, not knowing quite what to do with themselves while their heroes take their time recording their next studio album, the band’s drummer Phil Selway is not using the break to take any vacation time. Oh, no: The married dad of three is finally releasing his long-awaited solo disc, the gripping Familial, tomorrow — and chatting with UsMagazine.com all about it! See below, where he gives me an update on the project, how Radiohead’s next offering is starting to shape up, and if Kate Hudson REALLY made a move on Radiohead singer Thom Yorke at Coachella this past April (don’t get TOO excited).

US: Did you find that you wrote the lyrics first or did you write the music?

US: I know I was at Coachella, I thought that was an amazing show,Crystal Rock, too. That was in April.

US: Do you like being front and center as opposed being in the back with the drums?

PS: We are. And the way we work is that we work for short, intense periods because we want to have time away. The time away from Radiohead allows us to all go off and do other stuff, which is great. We haven’t sat down and discussed and said, ‘well, I think it would be really healthy if we all did solo stuff.’ I think we all just listened to each other’s requests and supported them and tried to make them happen as much as possible.

US: Did you sort of break with the other guys? I know Thom was working on his solo stuff. You are still in the studio working on Radiohead stuff, right?

Nelson Mandela, 91 and who appears less and less in public,Abercrombie bags, struck one of the enduring sporting images when in 1995 he presented the trophy to Springbok skipper Francois Pienaar after South Africa beat the All Blacks in the rugby World Cup final.

"I think people ought to just understand the family's traditions and customs and understand we've had a loss in the family and we are in mourning and that for me would be enough reason to leave the family to be for now.

The driver, 23-year-old Sizwe Mankazana, was close to the family but faces charges of drunk driving and culpable homicide.

LONDON (AFP) – Former South African President Nelson Mandela is being placed under 'extreme pressure' by football's world governing body FIFA to attend the World Cup final between European champions Spain and the Netherlands later on Sunday, his grandson told BBC radio.

Rugby unlike football had been seen as one of the pillars of the apartheid regime and seeing Mandela sporting a Springbok shirt as he presented the trophy represented a significant sign of the unifying of the two races.

Mandla Mandela blasted FIFA for not understanding the customs and traditions of the family and that they were still in mourning for Zenani, who died just two days after her 13th birthday when her car flipped over on a central Johannesburg highway while returning from a World Cup concert the night before the kick-off.

Mandla Mandela criticised FIFA and its president Sepp Blatter for pressurising his aging grandfather - who was instrumental in bringing the World Cup to South Africa - especialy in the wake of the death of his great granddaughter Zenani Mandela on the eve of the finals in June.

"The family has really taken a step back from a lot of activities and we've been mourning the loss of Zenani," Mandla Mandela told BBC Radio Five Live.

"Their focus is having this world icon in the stadium, yet not really paying attention to our customs and traditions as a people and as a family."

"But I think that decision will solemnly lie with him, how he wakes up today, how he feels, what his medical team says,NBA, but as well his family.

"So we've come under extreme pressure from FIFA requiring and wishing that my grandfather be at the final today (Sunday).

"They (FIFA) said that (president) Sepp Blatter wished that my grandfather comes out to the final.

Each summer, petty theft increases dramatically in stores across the Island, according to police and proprietors of retail businesses. Storeowners repeatedly catch shoplifters attempting to steal merchandise and turn them over to the police, but according to local law enforcement, some businesses are targeted more than others.

Lieutenant Tim Williamson of the Oak Bluffs Police said last week that shops offering merchandise that appeals to a younger clientele are the ones from which police most often receive calls. He added that storeowners whose shops are hit repeatedly are more likely to report theft.

“My belief,” the lieutenant explained, “is that we notice it more in certain stores, because certain shop owners are more vigilant and bring it to our attention. But I think it’s happening more than in just the stores where it’s being reported. The stores that typically report it are the stores where the merchandise is more geared toward young people, so they seem to be targeted more.”

    Where it’s happening

Lori Welch is the owner of Basics and Eastaway clothing stores, both on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. Her stores sell apparel, shoes, and jewelry that appeal to young people, and both businesses are frequent targets for shoplifters.

In the June 25 issue of The Times, police described a call on the afternoon of June 20, when Basics employees caught two young women attempting to steal merchandise. Melissa Boyd, 19, of Edgartown, had stolen the shirt she was wearing, as Michelle Plesser, 22, hid stolen merchandise in a baby carriage carrying two infants, according to the police report.

Ms. Welch said that in nearly 30 years of business, shoplifters have not been as big of a problem as they have been this year and that thieves have become more shameless.

“It’s all over the place,” she said. “It’s happening in the dressing rooms, but it’s also happening right on the floor, very brazen.”

Who shoplifts and how do they do it?

According to Ms. Welch, there is no profile for a typical shoplifter. She has reported thieves whose ages range from teens to middle age, and she has caught thieves who looked clean cut, as well as those who looked disheveled. Of shoplifting techniques, she said, “People will try to befriend you, and then steal from you anyway. Oftentimes, people purchase something and steal something, so it’s almost a false honesty.”

Erick Anderson, owner of Trader Jack’s on Circuit Avenue, agreed that the problem has grown dramatically this year, and most of the theft he has reported has involved high-school age kids.

“Honestly, I think it’s worse this year than in years past,” he said. “I think it’s the economy. Kids just don’t have enough money to buy things, so they steal stuff. They think they’re entitled.”
