June 29th, 2010Christian DiorNEW YORK (Reuters) – Soviet Russia's missiles and soldiers snaking through Red Square made for chilling images of a repressed society during the Cold War, but one Russian-American filmmaker is casting a new light on the period to show there was cultural life beneath the communist ice.
"The whole system, communism, was a fraud. It was about suppression and squeezing the life out of people. But even then, under this dictatorship they achieved some positive things." Pinkhasov explained.
"We like to vilify the Soviet Union, but there were many positive aspects of the system. The music club shows a close group of friends getting together. Art mattered then. It was a matter of escape and in it a way to find reality," said Harlow Robinson, professor of history at Northeastern University in Boston.
One film about German fencing legend Helene Meyer, whose half-Jewish heritage provided Adolf Hitler with political cover to stage the 1936 Olympics, won for best screenplay at the 2009 International Festival of Sports Films in Moscow.
Semyon Pinkhasov, an emigre to the United States at the height of the Cold War has made documentary films about prominent Soviet-era artisans and sport figures, who not only survived but thrived during communism's repressive rule.
"Music Made on Thursdays," his first film tells the story of Grigory Fried and his music club that took hold in 1965. Fried tackled taboo subjects when paranoia ruled and Russia's military industrial complex turned out war materiel above all else.
(Watch the video interview with Pinkhasov: http://r.reuters.com/vyb34m)
The club served as an outlet to listen and discuss classical music, something far removed from the overbearing state, the drudgery of work, and the miserable weather.
After having his medical school hopes crushed by Soviet prejudice, he reinvented himself as a physiotherapist, supported a family, trained champion fencers and marched with the U.S. Olympic team as a coach in 1984.
Every topic of discussion was taboo without communist party approval. Fried just never bothered to get advance clearance.
A composer and musicologist, Fried at 94 still runs the club but has never taken a salary, Pinkhasov said.
Self-taught and self-financed, his films have been shown worldwide at festivals, and on Russian and English-language television channels.
All of the films expose the tragicomic truths about cultural life under the grey facade of communism and fascism.
Pinkhasov left in 1976 and believed he would never return, only to see the spectacular collapse of the regime in 1991. But he did return - and often - to see family and friends and found the remnants of his old life still ticking.
Growing up in the aftermath of World War Two, Pinkhasov remembered the propagandist cartoons of Boris Efimov, perhaps Stalin's favorite cartoonist.
His brother Mikhail Koltsov was a journalist and top editor of Pravda before Josef Stalin had him arrested and executed in one of his purges.
Efimov antagonized the Nazis so much during Russia's brutal war against Germany that Hitler issued a standing order to have him arrested and shot once Moscow was captured.
When he died at age 108 in 2008, the diminutive man from Moscow,Juicy Couture, a Jew, was buried in the Russian Orthodox Novodevichy Cemetery, along with Boris Yeltsin and other Russian elite.
"Why wasn't I arrested?. This question people very often ask me, and I don't really know the answer, but I think Stalin liked my cartoons," Efimov said in the film titled "I am not Giordano Bruno."
The film's title is a reference to the 16th Century Italian priest, philosopher and astronomer who died when he refused to sign onto Vatican statements that the earth was the center of the universe.
Another film called "Judge Not…" tells the story of Tikhon Khrennikov, the first and last secretary of the Union of Soviet Composers, whose job was thrust upon him by Stalin in 1948. He held it until the Soviet Union's collapse. He died at 94 in 2007.
His influence in the country was enormous. He was responsible for the music played publicly in Russia, the venues, salaries, and the pecking order of Soviet musicians.
Pinkhasov says that while authors and poets were convicted of anti-Soviet behavior, with many imprisoned, exiled from public life or killed,Louis Vuitton, no musical composer under Khrenikov was believed to have suffered similar fates.

POKING BIG BROTHER
"It didn't work out the way (Fried) wanted. I started to go when I was 20 years-old. Now everyone in the audience is in their 60's. There are no young people and I thought I have to get this all on film before it dies," he said.
"When the temperatures sink and snow is on the ground there is still life under the ice. It is the same for society under a dictatorship," said Pinkhasov.
Then, nearing the time when most people retire, he plunged head first into the world of documentary films.

Sotheby's said the auction was its first based on technology, rather than an artist or theme.
Collectors and the curious jammed the salesroom at Sotheby's — competing fiercely with telephone bidders for works by artists like Adams, who alone was represented by some 400 works. There were also works by Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe,Bape, Lucas Samaras and William Wegman.
"Polaroid materials, in the hands of innumerable artists, redefined the aesthetic of the 20th century," said Denise Bethel, Sotheby's photography department director.
Warhol's "Self Portrait (Eyes Closed)," estimated at $10,000 to $15,000, fetched a record $254,500 for a Warhol photograph. Close's "9 Part Self-Portrait" sold for $290,500, a record for photographic work by the artist.
The sale of 1,200 photographs from the Polaroid collection was ordered by U.S. bankruptcy court in Minnesota when businessman Tom Petters, whose operations once included Polaroid Corp., was convicted last year of a $3.65 billion Ponzi scheme.
Nearly 90 percent of the lots offered found buyers, with the total easily beating the high pre-sale estimate.
Petters, sentenced in April to 50 years in prison, bought the bankrupt firm several years ago, and it was forced back into bankruptcy when the fraud was exposed in 2008.
Some photographs by Warhol and Close soared to 10 or even 20 times pre-sale estimates as records tumbled.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – A sale of photographs from the collection of the Polaroid Corporation brought in $12.5 million, setting an auction record for iconic photographer Ansel Adams and new marks for the medium by artists including Andy Warhol, Chuck Close, and David Hockney.
It was bought the Alinder Gallery, a California specialist in Adams, who was a close friend of Polaroid founder Edwin Land and had six of the sale's top 10 prices.
Adams was best known for majestic American landscape and nature photography, in particular Yosemite National Park. "Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite National Park" achieved the sale's top price of $722,500, a record for the photographer.

It’s 2003 in Iraq, and Army officer Roy Miller (Matt Damon, good as usual) can’t find any weapons of mass destruction, so he investigates for himself whether the bombs ever existed. The thriller whips between various conspiracy theories, confusingly weaving fact and fiction. The frenetic pace makes it feel more like an Xbox game than an action flick. (Universal, $30)

“[People say] I’m a very hypocritical person, ‘How do you say that and [sing], ‘I Kissed a Girl’?” she went on. “Spirituality and sexuality are two separate things. When you decide to put it into the same subject, it gets interesting for some people.”
Perry insists she’s a huge Gaga supporter.
The same day Lady Gaga released her “Alejandro” music video that featured herself cavorting semi-nude with a cross, Katy Perry Twittered, “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke.”
But the “California Gurls” singer, 25, swears she wasn’t trying to diss Gaga, 24.

June 13th, 2010LacosteA string of similar measures to expand travel to and trade with Cuba have died without reaching a full vote by either the House or Senate in recent years, but it is unusual for so many prominent Cuban dissidents to join in supporting a single piece of U.S. legislation.
Cuba’s government offered no comment. It routinely dismisses activists who criticize the country’s single-party government as paid agents of Washington out to undermine the communist system.
Peterson’s bill must pass the House Committee on Agriculture before it can go to a vote by the full House.
It was released by the Center for Democracy in the Americas, a Washington-based group that advocates freer travel and trade with Cuba.
Signers include blogger Yoani Sanchez and hunger striker Guillermo Farinas, as well as Elizardo Sanchez, head of Cuba’s most prominent human rights group.
The declaration, addressed to the U.S. Congress, supports a bill to let Americans visit Cuba freely and expand U.S. food exports to the island.
HAVANA – Seventy-four Cuban opposition activists — including the island’s best-known blogger and a hunger striker who has garnered worldwide attention — signed a letter Thursday cheering proposed legislation that would lift the U.S. travel ban to their country.
Other signers included Miriam Leiva, a founding member of the Damas de Blanco, or Ladies in White, a support group for wives and mothers of 75 opposition activists jailed during a government crackdown on organized dissent in March 2003. Her husband, dissident economist Oscar Espinosa Chepe, also signed the letter, as did Juan Almeida Garcia, whose father fought alongside Fidel Castro during Cuba’s 1959 revolution and rose to the rank of vice president before his death last year.
While travel to Cuba is technically not illegal, U.S. law bars most Americans from spending money here. Cuban-Americans, journalists, politicians and a few others can visit with special permission from the U.S. government. Washington’s 48-year-old embargo chokes off nearly all trade between the U.S. and Cuba — though cash-up-front sale of American food and farm products to the island has been allowed for the past decade.
“We share the opinion that the isolation of the people of Cuba benefits the most inflexible interests of its government, while any opening serves to inform and empower the Cuban people and helps to further strengthen our civil society,Red Monkey,” the letter said.
Sanchez’s blog, “Generacion Y,” uses caustic, often witty posts to describe life in Cuba. In November,Abercrombie bags, President Barack Obama took the unusual step of providing written answers to questions she submitted to the White House.
The government released a statement saying Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez met with European Union officials in Paris on Thursday and that the EU should abandon its “common position” calling for a transition to democracy and better human rights guarantees in Cuba.
The letter applauds a proposal introduced on Feb. 23 by Rep. Collin Peterson, a Minnesota Democrat, that would bar the president from prohibiting travel to Cuba or blocking transactions required to make such trips. It also would bar the White House from stopping direct transfers between U.S. and Cuban banks. That would make it easier for the island’s government to pay for U.S. exports.
The announcement came a day after Manfred Nowak, the U.N.’s independent torture investigator, complained that Cuba had blocked him from visiting the country despite inviting him earlier. Cuba had said its invitation still stands but that a date for the trip has yet to be agreed upon. The government says it needs no independent verification it doesn’t torture.
Farinas stopped eating and drinking after the death of jailed hunger striker Orlando Zapata Tamayo on Feb. 23. He is not imprisoned but has received nutrients since then through a tube at his home in central Cuba.
